- Medicine is a big connection to the Islamic religion because they were very dedicated to giving things to the poor and needy through charity, including medicine. By giving medicine, they would be helping the poor in the name of God. This connection heavily relates to the Third Pillar of Faith, Zakat. (For more information on Zakat, click here. Although the people of Islam had a very advanced study in medicine, the big improvements on medical treatment and medicine only began to take place during the 8th Century, in the Golden Age of Islam, when many fields of technology, mathematics, astronomy, and medicine became even more highly advanced. During this time, people in Islam began to study more treatments, such as surgery and drugs, along with newer medicines and remedies.

Some specific improvements that were made to hospitals as the medicinal field began to grow in Islam included the Muslims allowing patients to be treated for, no matter what race, religion, gender, or amount of wealth. They also began to use many different drugs on patients that were used as remedies and would make sure patients were treated with proper amounts of exercise and nutrition. They also began performing surgeries on patients and were able to develop more methods for treatments.

Other benefits to the Muslim's medicinal fields were that they were able to write many books on diagnoses, treatments, medicines, and drugs, which we can still use today, and they were able to develop easier ways to treat people who were sick, avoid diseases, and further advance the science of medicines and remedies.

These improvements are important to us today because we are still able to use many of the ideas and methods that they used back then. For example, we are still using and further developing hospitals and surgeries, and we are able to advance medicinal remedies and treatments from books like the Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb and the Kitab al-Hawi today. By looking at the way the Muslims used medicines and treated ailments, we can advance our own knowledge to make our medical field even wider and more developed.
